Asheville couples therapist Asheville teen therapist

Maggie Wiener, LCSW

**Now accepting new clients

My approach to therapy is one rooted in deeper connection and identifying the underlying feelings and core-beliefs that prevent traditional coping skills and strategies from being effective. Often, my clients are aware and understand what should be helpful to them, but struggle to turn that knowledge into change. We will work together to explore your relationship with yourself, how it developed and how it is impacting your ability to find meaning and live a fulfilled life.

My journey in this profession started with outdoor recreational therapy programs for teens. As a team, we learned how to live outside, how to embrace our fears while also facing challenges, and reflected on what it means to connect with yourself while facing difficulties connecting with others. I focused on helping others to look underneath behaviors at the root cause and developed a deeper understanding of how pain impacts the way we interact with the world.

From there, I have worked in multiple settings including residential treatment, school, medical and adventure-based therapy. Ultimately, I found my work with these diverse individuals centering around developing  a more comfortable relationship with distress and an improved sense of self-worth.  My diverse clinical experience has led me to embrace working with kids through adults; as well as families and couples. My clients are seeking therapy to navigate difficult life transitions, create repair after impactful life experiences, navigate complex relationships, regain their ability to experience a full range of emotion without getting stuck and have accountability without shame.

In working with me you will be unconditionally accepted and met with understanding and empathy. I am also here to help you so that means it’s my job to tell the hard truth at times, lovingly of course. It is also my commitment to you that I will always seek to understand before jumping to a solution or a quick fix. While many people have common struggles, learning each person’s unique story is what leads to lasting sustainable change.

Please don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions you have about me or my work. I hope to see you soon!

MY TRAINING AND CLINICAL PERSPECTIVE

I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and have a Masters Degree in Social Work from Western Carolina University. Having worked in many therapeutic settings, I have the privilege of having training in a variety of evidence based approaches with a focus on attachment and development.  I have clinical training in Polyvagal Interventions, Dyadic Developmental Psychotherapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Emotionally Focused Therapy, Family Systems, Theraplay, Dialectic Behavioral Therapy, Mindfulness and additional emotional regulation techniques. I am also a Brainspotting practitioner and have training in several experiential therapies.

ARE WE A GOOD FIT?

As a therapist, I enjoy working with adults who are in the crux of individuating as people and figuring themselves out and their path forward. This could include young adulthood, processing coinciding traumas or stepping into new identities/life roles. These periods of transition are a crucial time in your life with many challenges like finding new boundaries in relationships and understanding why old ways of doing things don’t work.

Adolescence is another period of major transition in life where social relationships are incredibly important and emotions start to become more complex. Helping adolescents be able to feel their feelings in healthy ways and participate in healthy relationships is another passion of mine. This work has led me to have a unique perspective and ability to work with parents whose children are navigating these major life transitions. Parenting is hard, especially when there are challenges in the way. My parenting work helps to create reciprocal understanding between the parent-child duo and help deepen the connection. As part of this work, I have received training in Theraplay, which is an evidence based, adult directed play therapy. Like all of the approaches I choose to utilize, Theraplay focuses on how to create healthier relationships to self and the world and is focused more on the internal experience than solution or coping skills.

Lastly, my work includes couples therapy. Romantic relationships are a big part of our lives and quite  difficult to figure out. Helping couples learn to look at each other’s behaviors as a part of a larger emotional experience and improve their communication is the focus of my work. I also work with individual adults processing how their life experiences are interacting with the relationships in their lives.
